It’s the 1st December, and in southern England that means grey clouds, grey puddles, and grey drops of rain falling from the sky - so not a day for getting outside.
I’m looking at my (very haphazard) series of images documenting my local area, and wondering where/what to photograph next.
The greyness outside reminded me that just over six years ago I made a short video of a quiet day on the River Adur.
Amongst the sound of the gulls, the rythmn of tiny wavelets lapping on the shore and the sight of some boats and sculls sliding by the camera, I remembered that there was a panning shot (2:00 in) looking west along the river, where now there is development.
Taking a screenshot and aligning with more recent images, I have a low resolution “baseline” for the pre-development era. You can just make out the tower of St Mary’s church in each image, centre left, which will soon be completely obscured by the new apartment blocks.
So, to planning - diarising a regular return to each location is needed, to remove some of the haphazardness (if it’s not a word, it is now) from my series.

Gosh - really shows the scale of development 😳
